WILLIAMS ISLAND

Williams Island, nestled within Richmond’s James River Park System, beckons fishing enthusiasts to its tranquil shores. Covering 95 acres, this island sits serenely in the middle of the James River, blending natural beauty with historical significance.

Here’s what you need to know:

Wildlife and History
Williams Island has been home to black bears and an albino deer. Its rich history adds to its allure.

Channels
The island is surrounded by two distinct channels created by dams:

  • Z-Dam (South Channel)
This highly visible dam was rebuilt in 1932. It’s a low-head dam with strong hydraulics, so even experienced paddlers should approach it with caution. In 1993, a 30-foot notch was added to allow migratory fish species to swim upstream.
  • North Channel
Quieter and calmer, this channel occasionally hears passing trains. The dam here dates back to 1905.
  • Access
Williams Island is reachable only by water and is open from sunrise to sunset.

Next time you’re in Richmond, consider casting your line in this tranquil fishing spot!
